Our mission at Te Tari Pūreke – Firearms Safety Authority is to make firearms use in New Zealand the safest in the world. We do this by effectively regulating firearms use and possession to help keep our communities safe.
Possessing and using a firearm is a privilege. Te Tari Pūreke is the regulator for firearms in New Zealand, with three core functions: effectively implementing the firearms licensing system; managing the Firearms Registry; and educating people to enable compliance and promote the safe use of legitimate firearms. A business unit of NZ Police, the Authority works with licence holders, dealers, clubs and ranges, collectors and manufacturers — grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori.
